How to Choose Fighting Styles?
Start With the Path You Want
Check prerequisites, find teachers and add up costs, then head to each guide to track your progress.
Which should beginners train first? On a tight budget, start with Dark Step; if you value steady normal attacks, consider Water Kung Fu. Superhuman needs 300 Mastery on each of the four basic Fighting Styles, while Godhuman needs 400 Mastery on each of the five advanced Fighting Styles; they're not the same set of requirements.
Melee stats affect Fighting Style damage and Energy; Fighting Style Mastery unlocks moves and advanced prerequisites. Simply switching Fighting Styles doesn't raise your max Energy.
Which goal do I want to reach?

Water Kung Fu: 750K Beli; or get by with the 150K Dark Step first.

1. Basic Fighting Styles: Know the Difference Between 300 and 400 Mastery
300 Mastery each on Dark Step, Electric, Water Kung Fu and Dragon Breath unlocks Superhuman; upgrading each to its advanced version needs 400 Mastery on that style plus an extra quest. Combat isn't one of Superhuman's four prerequisites.

The starting Fighting Style. Since Update 30, there's a quest path to relearn it, and it can progress into Advanced Combat; check the relearning requirements and the fruit-removal risk first. |
|
Secrets Master in Middle Town, First Sea No learning fee (removing your fruit and Fighting Style during the quest costs 50,000 Beli each) |
The upgraded Combat: Island Secrets → get Combat back → defeat every Awakened Boss using only Combat. No other Fighting Style Mastery needed, and it isn't a prerequisite for Superhuman or Godhuman. |
| Pirate Village / Hot and Cold / Castle on the Sea $150,000 |
The cheapest V1 Fighting Style, but its normal attacks are slow and its hit detection is poor with Buddha; it's the prerequisite for Death Step. | |
|
Mad Scientist in Skylands, First Sea 500K Beli Check the Lightning quest requirements first → |
Offers both control and mobility and works well with Buddha; 300 Mastery counts toward Superhuman, and 400 Mastery lets you learn Electric Claw. |
| Underwater City / Hot and Cold / Castle on the Sea $750,000 In the First Sea, rescue the teacher first → |
Steady normal attacks that don't move you, great for stand-still grinding with Buddha; 400 Mastery lets you learn Sharkman Karate. Since Update 30, you can only talk to the First Sea teacher after solving the Light Ray crystal puzzle in Underwater City. | |
| Wall archway in Kingdom of Rose, Second Sea / Castle on the Sea, Third Sea 1,500 Fragments |
Large area but slow moves with strong knockback; 300 Mastery counts toward Superhuman, and 400 Mastery lets you learn Dragon Talon. |
2. Superhuman: 300 on Each of Four, No Need to Max Them
You can buy it once you hit the threshold; no need to reach 600 Mastery first. Full cost from scratch & teacher locations →
| Style | Requirements & Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
|
Requirements: Dark Step, Electric, Water Kung Fu and Dragon Breath all at 300 Mastery. Location: Second Sea, cave on Snow Mountain / Third Sea, Castle on the Sea. Price: 3M Beli |
In the current version it's a traditional, technique-based combo Fighting Style, with clear limitations for mob farming, Buddha and Sea Events. Important: reaching 400 Mastery on it is one of the requirements for learning Godhuman. |
3. Four Advanced Fighting Styles: 400 on Each Matching Basic Style
Besides Mastery, you also need to complete each style's quest or item requirements. These four plus Superhuman make up the five prerequisites for Godhuman.
| Style | Requirements & Price | Features |
|---|---|---|
|
1. 400 Mastery on Water Kung Fu 2. Defeat Tide Keeper in the Second Sea for a 5% chance to drop the Water Key 3. 2.5M Beli + 5,000 Fragments |
Reworked to lean toward control and PvP The 3rd normal-attack hit moves you, and the 4th may miss while you're transformed with Buddha; for stand-still grinding, you can keep Water Kung Fu. |
|
|
1. 400 Mastery on Electric 2. Go to the Third Sea and beat the Previous Hero's challenge on Floating Turtle: reach the Mansion within 30 seconds 3. 3M Beli + 5,000 Fragments |
Fast movement speed; the C move closes the gap quickly, making it great for PvP. | |
|
1. 400 Mastery on Dragon Breath 2. Roll the Death King's lottery at the Haunted Castle (about 3%) to get Fire Essence, then give it to Uzoth at the Dragon Dojo on Hydra Island 3. 3M Beli + 5,000 Fragments |
Huge hitboxes, and the X move inflicts burn damage over time; its combos hit hard. | |
|
1. 400 Mastery on Dark Step 2. Second Sea: defeat the Awakened Ice Admiral at the Ice Castle for a 10% chance to get the Library Key 3. 2.5M Beli + 5,000 Fragments |
The upgraded Dark Step. Maximum Overheat boosts damage and adds fire; its moves can hit Sea Beasts, but hit detection gets unreliable while you're transformed with Buddha. |
4. Godhuman and Sanguine Art: Two Different Unlock Paths
Godhuman is all about Mastery on five Fighting Styles; Sanguine Art is all about the Leviathan Heart and materials. Choose based on your PvP, leveling or collecting goals. You don't need Godhuman first to get Sanguine Art.
| Style | Requirements & Cost | Verdict |

|
Check my unlock progress → 1. All 5 Fighting Styles, Superhuman, Death Step, Sharkman Karate, Electric Claw and Dragon Talon, need 400+ Mastery; Combat, Advanced Combat and Sanguine Art don't count. 2. Materials: 20 Fish Tail, 20 Magma Ore, 10 Dragon Scale, 10 Mystic Droplet. 3. 5M Beli + 5,000 Fragments. |
Currently the go-to all-round PvP Fighting Style. Its moves combine charge-ups, knockback and stuns; Update 27.5 shortened the charge time for X's maximum range. |
|
Check Heart and material progress → 1. After defeating the Leviathan, tow the Leviathan Heart back with a Beast Hunter boat; just defeating the boss doesn't count as delivering it. 2. Materials: 20 Demonic Wisp, 20 Vampire Fang, 2 Dark Fragment. 3. 5M Beli + 5,000 Fragments, handed to Shafi in the underground base at Tiki Outpost. No other Fighting Style Mastery required. |
The Z move heals 20% of your max HP on hit. Normal attacks, X and C don't drain HP; C's grab and brief lockdown are great for PvP combos. |
First Sea Side Path: Advanced Combat
Advanced Combat is the upgraded version of Combat added in Update 30, taught by the Secrets Master in Middle Town: first complete every First Sea Island Secret, get Combat back at the Prison, then defeat every Awakened Boss using only Combat and fix the fountain in Middle Town. It isn't the Superhuman path of raising four Fighting Styles to 300, and it isn't a required prerequisite for Godhuman.

❓ FAQ
Does Superhuman need 300 or 400 Mastery?
Buying Superhuman requires 300 Mastery each on Dark Step, Electric, Water Kung Fu and Dragon Breath, plus 3M Beli. If you later want to unlock Godhuman, Superhuman itself also needs 400 Mastery.
Which five Fighting Styles do you need to train for Godhuman?
400 Mastery each on Superhuman, Death Step, Sharkman Karate, Electric Claw and Dragon Talon, plus materials, 5M Beli and 5,000 Fragments. Sanguine Art and Advanced Combat aren't among these five prerequisites.
Can you relearn Combat after replacing it?
Since Update 30, there's a quest path to relearn it: first complete the First Sea Island Secrets and the Secrets Master's teleport clue, then go to the Remove Blox Fruit NPC at the Prison to remove your fruit and then your Fighting Style (50,000 Beli each). Removing your current fruit means you could lose it, so don't treat this as a free Fighting Style swap. After getting Advanced Combat, you can also ask the Secrets Master to switch back to Combat.
Which Fighting Style should beginners train first?
In the First Sea, get by with whichever Fighting Style is easy to obtain. Once you reach the Second Sea, if you grind mobs standing still with Buddha, prioritize keeping Water Kung Fu: its normal attacks don't move you and have short end lag. Sharkman Karate is still worth unlocking, but after the Update 27.2 rework it leans more toward control and PvP.
Do you have to get Godhuman first?
No rush. Godhuman is a powerful late-game Fighting Style, but its material and Mastery requirements are high. While you're still leveling, it's more practical to get your route, fruit and basic Fighting Styles sorted first.
Who is Sanguine Art good for?
Sanguine Art is aimed at late-game players. Its Z move heals 20% of max HP on hit, and its normal attacks are fast with long reach, making it good for boss fights and for players who want more sustain. It can also hit Sea Beasts during Sea Events, but Z doesn't heal you when it hits a Sea Beast.
How should you pair Fighting Styles with fruits and Races?
For leveling, attack speed and steady damage usually matter most; for PvP, it's control, gap-closers and combos. Check the Fruit List, the Races guide and the leveling route together instead of judging by one Fighting Style's strength alone.
